Despite sufficient evidence to justify landmark designation of the Historic Gouin-Lawrence-Graber House (2116 Centre Avenue, Bellmore) in alignment with Town of Hempstead Code 76-6(A), the Town of Hempstead (TOH) Landmarks Preservation Commission denied our initial application based on an arbitrary and capricious factor, not within the town code. Then irrespective of support by local experts in the field (highly credentialed registered architect and historic preservationist), the Landmarks Preservation Commission, denied the appeal without explanation.

Therefore, we are seeking to appeal and be heard by the TOH Town Board who have the right to review the materials provided and make an alternative decision. Town codes are in place to serve and protect our communities. In this case, to preserve local treasures like the Gouin-Lawrence-Graber House with its historic, cultural and architectural significance. It is located at the center of Bellmore Village and is the heart of our community. In alignment with the Bellmore Village theme: “A Stroll Down Memory Lane”, the Bellmore community would like to maintain its historic character for generations to come. The developer/owner plans to demolish this historic house, building two new houses in its place.

Since the TOH publicized the “Save Our Suburbs” campaign and have indicated that community voices should be heard, we would like the Town Board to honor this stance. Our communities have rights and local representatives such as the Town Board are in the position to ensure that town codes are enforced. Additionally, the developer/owner erected a fence with the intention to demolish the house against town ordinance. The TOH placed a stop work order on the Gouin-Lawrence-Graber House. But the fence remains and should be taken down. Developers should not be controlling our communities!

JOIN US SO THAT OUR COMMUNITY VOICES ARE HEARD! Please call or text to confirm that you WILL BE attending!
