Save Greenbury Point Conservation Area, Annapolis, MD from being destroyed for golf course

The Issue

We represent a community action group, Save Greenbury Point, that includes thousands of concerned citizens who have come to cherish the Greenbury Point Conservation Area (GBPCA) in Annapolis, Maryland for a multitude of reasons. We are hikers, dog walkers, birdwatchers, joggers, nature lovers, history enthusiasts, photographers, families with children, Navy retirees and dependents, and more. We are 2000+ members strong and growing daily. We reach out today with dire concern. We are aware that there is a proposal from the Naval Academy Athletics Association to demolish GBPCA in favor of constructing a second golf course, adjacent to the current, recently renovated golf course. It is an extreme understatement to say that this action would be an ecological tragedy. Furthermore, in light of the current state of global environmental degradation and an impending climate-change crisis, this proposal seems at the very least tone deaf, if not completely counter to the emergency we are collectively facing, with extreme heat and drought. Greenbury Point is not only a haven for the residents of Annapolis and the surrounding areas, but more importantly, home to over 500 species of plants and animals. It is 80% wetland and 100% within the Critical Area of the Chesapeake Bay, making it crucial to the health of the Bay, and the livelihoods of those who make their living there. The citizens of Save Greenbury Point urge the Naval Academy and US Navy officials in the strongest terms to categorically reject this golf course proposal, honor their promise to protect this area as a pristine wildlife conservation area, and work towards an ecologically sustainable future for the Greenbury Point Conservation Area.
