Save Great Kills Park

Save Great Kills Park
The Issue
We as Staten Island residents are deeply concerned with the deteriorating condition of Great Kills Park in Staten Island, New York. This beloved recreational area, managed by the National Park Service as part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, is facing significant threats from erosion, neglect, and environmental contamination.
The National Park Service is fully responsible for the neglect of the park which is steadily destroying its natural beauty and recreational amenities. Furthermore, promises of an environmental cleanup project to address the high levels of toxic radium within the park have been repeatedly postponed, leaving the health of the park's ecosystem and the safety of its visitors in jeopardy.
The neglect of Great Kills Park not only harms the wildlife that call this area home but also deprives taxpayers of a well-maintained and safe recreational space. This park is a cherished destination for countless families and individuals, especially during the summer months, when it attracts bikers, runners, walkers, rollerbladers, beachgoers, fishermen, and families seeking outdoor enjoyment.
The current state of disrepair is evident throughout the park. The old clubhouse/lifeguard building has shattered glass windows and no ceiling. Many of the cherished picnic benches are hidden in overgrown grass. Trees along the park's trails are collapsing, and multiple parking lots are succumbing to erosion, threatening to plunge into the water.
The animals inhabiting Great Kills Park are suffering due to these neglected conditions. Displacement, habitat degradation, and exposure to hazardous materials pose serious risks to their well-being. Furthermore, frequent park visitors are adversely affected by the deteriorating conditions, which undermine their ability to enjoy outdoor activities safely and comfortably.
However, we believe that there is hope for Great Kills Park. By prioritizing the preservation and restoration of this valuable natural asset, we can revitalize the park and unlock its full potential as a vibrant community hub. Fixing Great Kills Park would not only fulfill a long-overdue promise to taxpayers but also yield numerous positive outcomes:
Efficient use of tax dollars to address urgent maintenance needs and environmental cleanup efforts.
Increased visitation and economic activity, benefiting local businesses and the community.
Promotion of outdoor recreation and healthy lifestyles, encouraging physical activity and well-being.
Creation of job opportunities through park maintenance, food service, and other related services.
Revival of the park's amenities, such as food trucks and snack stands, to enhance visitor experience and enjoyment.
Please feel free to submit additional information, tips, and pictures to greatkillsparkpetition@gmail.com to help further reach our goal of demanding more attention to Great Kills Park. Anyone who is on board with our vision for the future of Great Kills Park please sign our petition. We urge the National Park Service, New York City Parks Department, and local government officials to take immediate action to save Great Kills Park. Our community deserves a well-maintained, safe, and accessible recreational space that can be enjoyed by present and future generations.
