Save Grandpa

Save Grandpa
The Issue
Grandpa is a beautiful ancient live oak.
We the undersigned, respectfully request that Citrus County officials and the current property owner take immediate steps to preserve an exceptionally large and historic live oak tree, known locally as “Grandpa,” during any development planning or approval process.
This live oak measures approximately 21 feet 3 inches in circumference at 4.5 feet above ground, placing it among the largest live oaks documented in Citrus County. Based on accepted growth rates for Quercus virginiana, a tree of this size is likely several centuries old, estimated at 300–400 years.
Trees of this age and size are extraordinary, non-renewable natural assets.
They provide High-value wildlife habitat.
Significant stormwater and soil stabilization benefits.
Long-term carbon sequestration.
Cultural and historical continuity for the community.
Unlike younger trees, ancient live oaks cannot ever be meaningfully mitigated or replaced once removed.
Although the parcel containing this tree has recently been sold, the development process is not yet complete. Citrus County retains authority through site plan review, roadway design, permit approvals, and conditions of development to require reasonable preservation measures for significant natural resources.
We respectfully request the following
heritage or specimen tree designation under applicable county standards.
Modification of site layout, access roads, or infrastructure to avoid tree removal.
Establishment of appropriate root protection zones and construction buffers.
Denial of any permit that would unnecessarily result in the removal of this tree.
This request is not opposition to development, but a call for responsible planning that balances growth with preservation of irreplaceable natural features.
Citrus County’s character and environmental health depend on thoughtful decisions like this. Preserving a single ancient tree demonstrates a commitment to stewardship without preventing reasonable use of property.
We urge county officials and the property owner to work collaboratively with the community to ensure this historic live oak remains standing for future generations.
