The Issue

For 39 years, Grand Master Lee’s Taekwondo School has been a cornerstone of the Abbotsford community, offering countless individuals the opportunity to learn, grow, and connect through the art of Taekwondo. Many of us have spent years training here, creating lifelong friendships and memories.

Our school is now under significant financial stress due to an issue involving totes, barrels, and IBC tanks that were placed in the school’s parking lot. These containers were originally permitted to the lessee under the understanding that they would be stored empty and clean, and that their temporary presence would support the promotion of a smart farm business in Abbotsford. Unfortunately, that initial promise was not honoured, and the situation has since escalated well beyond what was agreed upon.

As a result, Grand Master Lee is now facing potentially overwhelming costs ranging from $100,000 to $130,000. This financial strain threatens the very existence of the school, and if forced to pay this amount, the doors may close forever, affecting students, instructors, and the broader community alike.

It is important to note that the school community has not stood idle. Students, parents, and instructors have already been actively helping to move a significant number of these containers from the parking lot. The school as a whole has been putting in considerable effort—tracking down, contacting, and putting pressure on the individual responsible, to remove all remaining items from the property. Grand Master Lee and the school community have demonstrated good faith and a genuine commitment to resolving this matter as quickly as possible.

Closing this school would mean more than just losing a place to practice Taekwondo—it would mean disrupting a space that has fostered camaraderie, discipline, and mutual support for nearly four decades. Grand Master Lee’s Taekwondo School is not just a business; it is a community hub, where people of all ages and backgrounds come together to share their passion for martial arts.

We urge the City to find a fair resolution to this issue, one that does not place an undue financial burden on Grand Master Lee or jeopardize the future of the school. Solutions could include negotiating an extended deadline to remove the aforementioned containers, reducing or waiving the penalties given the school’s demonstrated good-faith efforts, or working collaboratively with the school to ensure full compliance within a reasonable timeframe.

Stand with us in preserving this vital piece of Abbotsford’s cultural and social fabric. By signing this petition, you are helping us appeal to city officials to protect Grand Master Lee’s Taekwondo School and allow it to continue serving the community as it has done for so long. We need your support to ensure that future generations can benefit from its rich legacy.

Sign the petition to help us keep Grand Master Lee’s Taekwondo School open and thriving for many more years to come!!!
