Save Gleneagles Adventure Park (Horseshoe Bay Skatepark)

Save Gleneagles Adventure Park (Horseshoe Bay Skatepark)
The Issue
On Monday, March 10th 2025, the District of West Vancouver council unanimously approved work to design and estimate the cost of replacing the world famous skatepark at the Gleneagles Community Center in the Horseshoe Bay neighborhood of West Vancouver BC Canada. The park could see a complete redesign into a pickleball court as soon as Spring of 2026.
The North Shore Pickleball Club released a site survey to the public on Thursday, January 30th. It included a proposal that excluded the skate bowl, with the verbatim quote:
"The survey was able to make explicit that the location of the proposed Gleneagles courts was on the dirt bike park and would not replace the skatepark bowls"
Also included in the survey was the question: " In your opinion, the first priority for new courts should be for" With 66% of respondents voting in favor of more courts at Ambleside, and 28.2% voting in favor of 3 courts at Gleneagles, again excluding the skate bowl.
A revised site survey was presented to council on March 10th, the day of the vote, that now included the skate bowl. This was not seen by the public until that moment and it completely contradicted all previous public information.
The Gleneagles Adventure Park, most commonly referred to as the Horseshoe Bay Skatepark or simply the Bay Bowl, is an institution in Metro Vancouver. It is one of the best designed and constructed parks in all of Canada and has attracted riders from all over the world for 20 years. To lose a facility of this caliber would be detrimental to the people of West Vancouver, and the world at large.
Skateboarding and BMX became Olympic sports in 2020. There are few parks in this country that can prepare riders for Olympic competition, and this is one of them. To remove this elite level ramp configuration is to rob the fine people of Canada their chance to become Olympic champions.
There are several dilapidated tennis courts within close proximity to the community center, spending a huge amount of money on new facilities is a gigantic waste of money when there are unused courts in the vicinity.
The dirt jumps are an offensive eyesore, that have been largely unmaintained for the duration of their existence. They can certainly and easily be removed. The skatepark is a different story, it is a beautiful and impressive park that will take much demolition to properly remove.
The community center has an oversized parking lot that is never anywhere close to capacity. The removal of the dirt jumps and reclaiming of some parking space would be adequate for a new park area.
The North Shore Bike Park, located inside the Capilano Mall in North Vancouver, is also being removed for pickleball courts. I do not think this is a good look for the pickleball community. Youth are losing their spaces at an alaming rate due to this emerging sport - which is tiny in comparison to the bike and skate culture of this locale.
ABOUT ME: My name is Ryan, I'm known around here as RT. I am a former employee of the Gleneagles Community Center as a Park Host: an on site attendant who kept the park clean, administered first aid, distributed safety gear and informed park users of amenities in the Horseshoe bay area. I have been riding BMX bikes my entire life. I do not want to see this amazing place go away. SAVE THE BAY!!!
