The Issue

Gedling is a place with beautiful green spaces, a haven of natural beauty that contributes significantly to the community’s well-being and the environment. These areas serve as the green lungs of the Borough, providing clean air, recreational opportunities, and a sanctuary for wildlife. However, these cherished spaces are under imminent threat due to plans proposed by the Gedling Labour Council, which aim to build over 11,000 new properties—a staggering 45% increase that will obliterate much of the green belt.

This plan targets areas such as Burton Joyce, Stoke Bardolph, Lambley, Ravenshead, Bestwood, Bardolph View, Rivendell, Woodborough, Newstead, Papplewick and Mapperley Golf Course, some of which were previously promised protection. Such an extensive development will not only taint the scenic beauty and ecological balance but also break a firm guarantee made by local figures like Michael Payne, John Clarke, and Jenny Hollingsworth, who had assured the preservation of Stoke Bardolph and Mapperley Golf Course. Their recent actions supporting these plans go against the promises they once advocated publicly.

For many residents of Gedling, these green spaces are more than just plots of land; they are vital parts of our lives. They contribute to our mental health, community strength, and local biodiversity. Building over them jeopardizes not only the future aesthetics of the borough but also our quality of life. We believe that the Labour Government's push for such a massive-scale house-building initiative is short-sighted and damaging.

We call upon Labour bosses at Gedling Borough Council to reconsider these plans and explore alternatives that do not sacrifice our green belts. Sustainable development can be achieved through better use of existing urban spaces, renovation of derelict properties, and clever urban planning that respects the environmental needs and promises made to the community.

Join us in our fight to protect Gedling’s green spaces from overdevelopment. Stand with us to hold those in power accountable and demand that they honor the commitments made to our community. Let’s preserve the natural beauty and integrity of Gedling for future generations. Please sign this petition to show your support.
