Dear Governor DeSantis and Senator Scott:
As a dedicated conservative voter in Florida who has proudly voted for your state and federal leadership, as well as for President Trump, in past elections, I am writing to respectfully request your urgent attention and leadership to extend the imminent expiration of legal status and work authorization for Haitian Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders.
While I recognize that TPS was originally conceived as a temporary humanitarian measure, the sudden removal of roughly 150,000 Haitian responsible, hard working employees from Florida’s workforce creates an immediate, practical crisis for our local economy, our small businesses, and our elderly population. Approaching this issue from a standpoint of economic pragmatism and personal responsibility reveals that maintaining workforce stability is vital to keeping Florida strong.
Economic Contributions to Florida
· Direct Economic Output: Haitian TPS holders in Florida contribute an estimated $2.6 billion annually to our state’s gross domestic product, paying state and local taxes and supporting consumer markets.
· Filling Critical Labor Shortages: Across Florida, over 93,000 Haitian workers are employed in sectors that struggle heavily to recruit labor—including critical positions in hospitality, agriculture, and construction. Forcing these vetted, tax-paying workers out of their jobs will spike operational costs for our farmers and business owners.
Impact on Healthcare and Elder Care
· Sustaining Long-Term Care: Florida has one of the largest elderly populations in the nation, and thousands of Haitian TPS recipients serve as frontline nursing assistants, registered nurses, home health aides, and facility staff.
· Preventing Institutional Strain: The state’s nursing home and healthcare associations have warned that losing up to 35,000 experienced long-term care workers will severely compromise care for seniors and individuals with disabilities. This sudden loss of labor risks bottlenecking our wider hospital networks and increasing healthcare costs for working families and the elderly.
The Conservative Call to Action
A conservative approach values law, order, and practical economic sense. Dislocating hundreds of thousands of productive, employed, and law-abiding individuals who are actively integrated into our economy disrupts the very industries keeping Florida prosperous.
Therefore, I respectfully urge you to support pragmatic administrative or federal legislative solutions, such as S. 4814, that provide a sensible extension or bridge for these essential workers. Doing so will protect Florida's seniors, support our businesses, and maintain economic stability across our state.
