The Issue

The residents, children and families of Five Mile Point, need your help to preserve the community character of the residential neighborhood. There are currently no industrial uses functionally located in this neighborhood.

This Petition is to stop the rezoning of five Mile point speedway land to industrial development. This change would likely be a detriment to the community in the following ways:

  • Traffic Pattern (safety) increasing the traffic by 960 daily trips (per Broome County), with a truck route on residential roads in a neighborhood with countless school buses. The traffic going through a park and walking track that draws hundreds of people from the community (with no current sidewalks).
  • Environmental Justice regarding air quality, water/sewer concerns, truck emissions, noise (the speedway was seasonal with approx. 30 races per year as opposed to 365 days a year 24/7 at an industrial site), the potential of hazardous waste (it has not been determined if this will be a manufacturing site and what will be manufactured) and a host of other concerns.

The planning board has already voted in favor of moving this project forward (despite the significant concerns raised in the Broome County Planning Boards Report and despite a lack of transparency regarding the development itself and the lasting impact it could have on this community. Please sign now so that this petition can be given to the Town Board on April 4th @ 6pm (Kirkwood Town Hall) at the next hearing to discuss this project. Please let your voice be heard.

Please feel free to reach out to the County Executive, Jason Garner, office 607-778-2109 as well as our Town Supervisor Lew Grubham 607-775-1370 to let them know that the PEOPLE are NOT in favor of industrial development in OUR residential neighborhood.
