Save Farmers, Stop Lower Bhavani Project canal concrete lining
The Issue
Lower Bhavani Project Canal is a 201-kilometre long irrigation canal which runs in Erode district in Tamil Nadu, India. The Lower Bhavani Dam, the second largest in Tamil Nadu, is unique as it was built with earth along with its canal to help recharge the groundwater table for irrigation as well as domestic needs. The dam irrigates a total area of over 2,07,000 acres and the canal has been designed to supply water for 1,03,500 acres at a single time. Even when the sluice gates are opened for direct irrigation in 1,03,500 acres, the remaining farm land gets recharged with increase in water level in wells and tanks for irrigation needs.
However, such recharge of ground water level will get affected due to the lining of concrete in the Lower Bhavani Project canal causing a great water crisis. In 2013, the government of Tamilnadu took up the project of concrete lining of the LBP canal, however it was dropped after farmers heavily opposed it. Now again after several years, the government has opened tenders for the project by just referring to renovation works which includes concrete lining. If the project gets started, it will severely affect the rechargement of underground water, thereby posing a serious threat to whole agriculture ecosystem and domestic water supply system by directly affecting lakhs of farmers and ordinary citizens living around the districts of Erode, Tiruppur and Karur. We request the Government of Tamilnadu, Chief Minister MK Stalin and Minister of Water Resources Duraimurugan to drop this project of concrete lining LBP canal permanently for the welfare of the people of the above mentioned regions and also for protecting our environment.
