Save Falmouth Schools

The Issue

TL:DR:

  • Falmouth Public Schools have made several proposals for changes to the district, including the repurposing of Teaticket Elementary into an Early Childhood Center for Pre-K, moving all current Teaticket Students over to East Falmouth, and additional changes to include taking Morse Pond offline as a school, and renovations to Lawrence.
  • These proposals were made by the School Administration without stakeholder input from Teaticket Teachers, Staff or Families.
  • The timeline includes a Building Needs committee, who is tasked with coming up with an adequate proposal to submit to the School Committee.
  • The School Committee said at their meeting in September that ultimately, the School Committee has the final say on the proposed plans and the voting of the plans.
  • This is inequitably targeting the two highest-needs groups of students.
  • This is rushed, and we are requesting a PAUSE.

Long Version:

As families and educators connected to Teaticket Elementary, we are deeply concerned about the recent proposal to move our students to East Falmouth. This change would disrupt many of our families who have built their lives around Teaticket's proximity and unique educational atmosphere. It is evident that this school is not only where we work, but also where we educate our children—a safe and nurturing environment that we've come to trust.

We propose reconsidering this decision and exploring other available options. We urge for a redistricting measure that could evenly distribute needier students without causing disruption to existing student communities, with the ultimate goal of not closing any elementary schools in town. We understand the need for preschool in our town, but would like more than 6-weeks to come up with an alternative to closing an elementary school.

It's important that the decision-making process takes into account the least disruptive solution possible, balancing the needs of all students, and maintains the high quality of education our children deserve.

We urgently call upon the district school board to protect our school and children. Please join us in preserving the integrity of our community schools by signing this petition.
