The Issue

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) provision at the University of Dundee is under threat. Staff in English for International Students (EIS) have been informed of proposals to dismantle this vital service, with far-reaching consequences for students, staff, and the wider university community.

The closure of EIS would mean:

  • The end of its pre-sessional English programmes, which would weaken the support many students receive as they transition into academic life at Dundee.
  • The end of specialist one-to-one tutorials and university-wide workshops, which play a key role in student success, progression, and confidence.
  • The end of specialist in-sessional modules embedded within degree programmes across the university, including Education, Social Work, Business, Psychology, Nursing and Medicine, Biomedical Engineering, and Law.
  • The end of community-based ESOL provision and specialist support for distance-learning students.
  • The end of successful partnership provision in China.

EIS has been presented as a service with limited impact. The reality is very different. EIS is BALEAP-accredited and a British Council Centre of Excellence, and our work makes a difference across the university. We reach students across disciplines, support academic success at every stage of study, strengthen international partnerships, and help make Dundee a welcoming and inclusive place to learn.

Discovery needs communication. Dundee needs EIS.
