Save Elden Ditch: Protect Sylvania's Natural Habitat and Flood Control
The Issue
We, the Citizens of Sylvania, Ohio, hereby petition the City of Sylvania to reconsider its plans for the Elden Ditch Watershed Improvement Project and prioritize the preservation of this valuable natural resource.
As you may be aware, The Elden Ditch Improvement Project involves the complete removal of the Elden Ditch, which could have significant negative impacts on our community. The ditch plays a crucial role in managing stormwater, supporting local wildlife, and maintaining the character of our neighborhood.
Key Concerns:
Outdated Ditch Removal Practices: While ditch removal was once common, it is now widely recognized as an ineffective and often harmful approach to stormwater management. Removing natural ditches can disrupt ecosystems, increase erosion, and contribute to the harmful algae blooms in Lake Erie. These blooms are fueled by nutrient runoff from agricultural and urban areas, which natural features like ditches help filter and absorb. By preserving the Elden Ditch, we can help protect local waterways and contribute to the health of Lake Erie.
Wildlife Habitat Impact: The ditch supports numerous wildlife species by providing food, shelter, and breeding grounds. Its removal would disrupt this habitat, leading to wildlife displacement and potential population declines.
Construction Disruptions: The project would involve extensive roadwork, leading to noise, traffic congestion, and temporary access restrictions for residents. These disruptions would be stressful and inconvenient for all of us.
Negative Impacts on Residential Quality of Life: The proposed removal of trees along the ditch would expose power lines, creating a visual eyesore. For nearby residents, this would also mean less shade, reduced privacy, and a diminished quality of life.
Additionally, the proximity of the ditch to a church that houses both a preschool and serves as the meeting spot for the local Boy Scout troop raises concerns about losing a valuable natural resource. The ditch offers educational opportunities for children at the preschool and the Boy Scouts, who could use it for nature-based learning and projects. Its removal would eliminate these hands-on learning experiences. Increased noise and construction could also disrupt the tranquility that families and children enjoy in this community space.
Lack of Flooding Justification: Importantly, there have been no recent reports of flooding in our area. My personal experience supports this observation, as I have not witnessed any drainage issues linked to the Elden Ditch. This raises questions about the necessity of the project and whether its scope is truly justified.
Join Us in Saving the Elden Ditch:
We believe the ditch can be preserved while still addressing any drainage concerns. We ask you to join us in advocating for alternative solutions, such as:
- Natural Drainage Solutions: Instead of removing the ditch, let’s explore sustainable drainage options that incorporate it as a natural feature, ensuring that the flow of water is not diverted away from it. Given the lack of recent flooding, it’s likely that the ditch’s current capacity is adequate, and it may outperform any proposed artificial pipe system.
- Improved Maintenance: The functionality of the ditch could be enhanced through regular cleaning, debris removal, and vegetation management, rather than resorting to drastic measures.
- Community Involvement: We can all take part in maintaining and conserving the ditch to protect this important resource.
By working together, we can ensure that our community remains vibrant and sustainable without the negative effects of unnecessary construction.
