SAVE EKIN ROAD: Fix the flats and hands off the houses!

SAVE EKIN ROAD: Fix the flats and hands off the houses!
The Issue
Ekin Road has been an established community in Cambridge for decades. Children play in the street, close family members live a few doors apart, and elderly stalwarts share their long experiences on the street with newcomers. Cambridge City Council is threatening to destroy this community by railroading through a development project which would demolish the neighbourhood's houses and scatter its residents.
Although demolition of the entire estate is opposed by the residents of Ekin Road, the flats on the street are in dire need of improvements as they have been desperately neglected. Though the Council has not condemned them as structurally unsound, then are clearly beyond repair and should be demolished and rebuilt. For years, residents have complained to the Council about damp, black mould, physical damage - all to no avail. These residents deserve better: they will need to be closely consulted about options for rebuilding, rehousing and potential return.
The houses are a different story entirely. Made to last, they have comfortably housed people for decades, who have built and shaped their lives around this street. These residents want to stay, and they deserve to.
However, Cambridge City Council doesn’t seem to care. After more than a year of residents engaging in good faith with multiple consultations, the Council is set on demolishing the entire neighbourhood, council homes and homeowner freeholds alike. Their latest “consultation” only gives residents two options: bulldoze 80% of the street, or bulldoze it all.
The community on Ekin Road is precious. It has grown over decades, but will be destroyed in an instant if the Council makes the wrong decision to flatten all our homes, and our community along with them. Sign this petition and we can show them what true community solidarity looks like.
Cambridge City Council: don’t destroy our community! Fix the flats, and hands off the houses!
