The Issue

Currently construction is planned and ongoing on the blocks between 16th and 21st street, including Margaret Pace Park. This impedes on our quality of life. Recently Sky Coffee was relocated which was the only outdoor space which was enjoyed by residents and incorporated trees into their design. Currently Melo Group is planning to develop the block on 18th and Biscayne which in addition to being one of the only green spaces left in Edgewater was a site for the local animals. On Tuesday morning they cut a beloved tree and need to be held accountable to replace the tree!

The Miami Citizen's Bill of Rights is currently being violated, it states:

"It shall be the policy of the City to conserve and protect its natural resources and scenic beauty, which policy shall include the abatement of air and water pollution, and excessive and unnecessary noise"

"Remedies tor violations. Residents of the City shall have standing to bring legal actions to enforce the City Charter, the Citizens' Bill of Rights, and the Miami-Dade County Citizens' Bill of Rights as applied to the City. Such actions shall be filed in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court pursuant to its general equity jurisdiction and, if successful, the plaintiff shall be entitled to recover costs, but not attorney's fees, as fixed by the court. Any public official, or employee who is found by the court to have willfully violated this section shall forthwith forfeit his or her office or employment."

 (Res. No. 07-0625, § 2, 10-25-07; Res. No. 16-0352, 5 2, 7-29-16)

When our neighborhood has turned into a construction zone and all the trees and parks are removed property values and quality of life will be degraded.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to express your concerns regarding development in Edgewater. Public engagement is an important part of our process, and I appreciate residents who care deeply about the future of their neighborhood. I understand and share the concerns surrounding the preservation of green space, the urban tree canopy, neighborhood character, traffic, infrastructure, and quality of life. These are issues I have consistently raised, have advocated for, and taken seriously throughout my service as your Commissioner. As Commissioner, my responsibility is to ensure that every development application is reviewed in accordance with the City’s Charter, Code, zoning regulations, appropriateness to the neighborhood and applicable state law. While the City cannot arbitrarily deny projects that comply with existing legal requirements, we can and should insist that developments meet all applicable standards, protect public assets and tree infrastructure where possible, and provide significant public benefits. My office has consistently advocated for stronger protections for Miami’s tree canopy, greater transparency in the development review process, infrastructure planning that keeps pace with growth, and thoughtful urban design that enhances - not diminishes- the quality and identity of our neighborhoods. We have also supported independent review of tree policies and continue working to strengthen preservation and mitigation standards citywide. I have heard the concerns expressed in this petition and will ensure they are part of the public record as projects move through the review process. I will continue to ask difficult questions, seek accountability from developers and City staff, and advocate for solutions that balance responsible growth with environmental stewardship and the long-term interests of existing residents. Edgewater is one of Miami’s most dynamic neighborhoods, but growth must be accompanied by responsible planning, adequate infrastructure, preservation of our urban canopy, and protection of the public realm. My commitment remains to ensuring that residents have a voice throughout that process and that development serves the broader interests of the community- not just individual projects. We have worked hard to preserve the quality of life and build the character of our neighborhoods. Thank you again for your continued engagement and advocacy. Our door is always open, and we encourage one on one engagement with any specific concerns.
