Although the owners of the Drury Lane Shops have been fighting the takeover of their heritage Drury Lane Community Shopping Centre by Waka Kotahi Auckland Transport since 2019, they have learned the hard way that there is no way of successfully fighting 'Bureaucracy'.
Since September 2023, fourteen thousand, six hundred and forty-one - 14,641, Auckland Kiwis have stepped up to support the Drury Lane Shopping Centre by signing this petition to save the shops, most are appalled, irate and sad to lose these vital community shops especially when there a cheaper option available is ignored!,
BUT! Not one of the politicians, councilors, Waihoehoe road project team or Mayor, contacted and questioned multiple times, have bothered to address the petitioners concerns in any helpful way! Some of the bigger names could at least have shown up to the Drury shopping centre and assessed the situation for themselves instead of just listening to Waka Kotahi's viewpoints.
No-one wants to stand in the way of progress, but when there is a cheaper alternative available you would think one of them would take notice!
Our 200-year-old Well inside the butcher shop, Drury Meats, will be destroyed at the same time even though the original Drury owner went to extraordinary lengths and expense to preserve and protect the wishing Well for future Drury residents to enjoy!
We have all learned that the voice of the people means nothing to those we have elected. We have also learned it is time to be more careful about who we vote into office. We have lost our Drury Lane Community Shopping Centre!!
PS. We have heard on the grapevine that the Jolly Farmer is next to go!
The Jolly Farmer is 99 years old and next year will be 100 years old and potentially able to be protected on historic status! Why would the Auckland Council allow this building to be demolished right before it turns 100 years old?
There are so few historic buildings in South Auckland and this one is so popular and well patronized being a great example of an historic public house building in New Zealand!
