The issue

Our favourite shop owners of the Drury Lane Village shops are being completely blindsided, overlooked and forgotten by bureaucracy!

These shops established in 1964,  includes a 'historic brick well' inside the butcher's shop! This well was built in the 1800's!  History as well as local businesses are being forcibly demolished  for widening the road and transmission lines! Rudely, no consideration has been given to the fate of our 'heart of Drury'. The Drury Lane Shops!

Another fancy new mall is planned further down the road  accessible from the new railway station being built down there, but that is no place for our award winning community shops. Our master butcher, favourite dairy superette, popular busy bakery, coffee shop, sushi bar and seven other small independent businesses.

Bureaucracy at it again! No thought for the history and services provided and prided by the local people while they rush through building 160,000 houses, a massive industrial complex, 3 fancy shopping centres and more, yet they can't be bothered protecting the existing site of our popular and  historic Drury Lane Village shops in their grand scheme.

While an alternative option was suggested and available at far less cost to the taxpayers, and despite months and months of meetings and pleading for Drury Lane shops to be spared we are being told  it is a 'done deal'!  We are shocked to hear these 12 business owners still do not know what is happening to their businesses!

Now is the time to act if you treasure your Drury Lane Village shopping atmosphere and service. They are being ignored right now and need our support!

There is room on the Southern side for these road works and transmission lines and absolutely no need to demolish our beloved Drury Lane shops! It will also save millions if it is moved to the south side! We are told that cost means nothing!

Quote "It's not about the money"

Sign the petition and fire an  email off to the Minister of Transport, David Parker, who we know is the only one able to intercede with the power to save the historic Drury Lane Shops. A simple change of design to transfer widening of the road from the North side of the road to the South Side of the road will cause less disruption and impact on so many small businesses and at at far less cost.

Auckland Council hands are tied because this property is proposed to be taken by Waka Kotahi, NZTA, forcibly under the Public Works Act!
