Save Dave’s Line at Keira MTB
The issue
Growing up in Wollongong and being an avid mountain biker, I have come to deeply appreciate the intricate skills required to excel at the sport. These skills aren't just useful, they are essential for safety and for taking our passion to new heights—literally. Unfortunately, we don't have many places dedicated to developing these skills. That's why Dave’s Line is so important to our local mountain biking community.
Dave’s Line is not just another trail; it’s a lifeline for local riders of all skill levels aiming to hone their jump skills. It offers a safe environment to learn and perfect jumps, which are a fundamental aspect of mountain biking—especially for those looking to transition from hobbyists to competitive riders. The existing facilities do not come close to providing what Dave’s Line offers, making it indispensable.
Yet, despite its importance, Dave’s Line is under threat due to recent city development plans. This initiative overlooks the needs of local sports enthusiasts and could eliminate the only dedicated place we have to practice these crucial skills. This not only diminishes the recreational value of our city but also narrows our youth's opportunities to engage in constructive physical activity. According to the Wollongong City Council reports, outdoor recreation spaces have been shrinking, a trend we must reverse.
Losing Dave’s Line would mean losing a vital resource for skill development, community cohesion, and even local tourism, as mountain biking draws enthusiasts from everywhere. In a city where options are limited, Dave’s Line is a beacon for many young individuals seeking to develop their abilities safely.
We propose a collaboration with city planners to preserve and even enhance Dave’s Line as part of the new development plan. By creating an integrated space that caters to both urban needs and recreational activities, we can establish a model community that values health and sports equally.
We urge the city council to listen to its residents who cherish not only mountain biking but also what it stands for—a spirited, engaging, and healthy way of life. Your signature can help make this vision a reality. Sign the petition to save Dave’s Line.
