Save Datchet Tree - 170-year-old Wellingtonia - From Destruction

Save Datchet Tree - 170-year-old Wellingtonia - From Destruction
The Issue
The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead and Direct Line must honour their environmental and climate commitment and protect this landmark tree.
Planning officers at the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead have granted permission to Direct Line to fell a 170-year-old Wellingtonia (Sequoiadendron Giganteum Wellingtonia) in Datchet.
The tree is one of the tallest and oldest in Datchet and an important part of village heritage. It has a Tree Protection Order, is in the protected Conservation Area and is listed on the Woodland Trust Ancient Tree Inventory.
It is implicated in subsidence at a more-recent neighbouring building but there is doubt that it is the main cause. Other solutions are available which would allow the tree to be kept and the building stabilised.
We ask RBWM to work with Direct Line to protect the Wellingtonia and resolve the subsidence for the home owners. These are not mutually-exclusive goals.
Felling this tree would detract from the natural environment and would show disregard for the intrinsic character and beauty of the riverside area and the wider benefit of its trees.
