The Issue

Adventure playgrounds are much more than places to play. They are safe, supervised spaces where children build confidence, stay active, make friends, and develop independence.

Closing this playground would be a huge loss for local children, families, and the wider community.

For many children — especially those living in flats without gardens or safe outdoor space — it is one of the few places where they can play freely and safely after school and during holidays. It also supports working families and provides a positive alternative to isolation, antisocial behaviour, and involvement in crime or gang-related activity.

The site is also an important community resource. It is used as a food bank supporting local families, and it hosts a home education group that provides valuable opportunities for children who are home educated to socialise, learn, and take part in activities.

The playground is especially important for low-income families, children with additional needs, and young people who rely on supervised activities. It also plays a vital role in supporting children’s mental health and wellbeing.

Adventure playgrounds help create safer, stronger communities by giving children positive activities, trusted adult support, and a sense of belonging.

If the playground remains open under new management, we strongly urge that the current staff remain in place. The existing team know the children, families, and local community extremely well and have built trusted relationships over many years. They are kind, supportive, experienced, and central to the positive ethos of the playground. Many local families are deeply concerned that replacing them with unfamiliar staff could damage the unique environment and sense of safety that children currently enjoy.

We urge Islington Council to halt any closure plans, properly consult local residents, and protect accessible play spaces for children in our borough.

Children deserve safe places to play, grow, and thrive. Once spaces like this are lost, they are very difficult to replace.
