Save Cordelia, the Copper European Beech

Save Cordelia, the Copper European Beech
The Issue
Cordelia, a majestic Copper European Beech tree in Dorchester, is at risk of being cut down, but she is not beyond saving. Cordelia is not just a tree, she is a living landmark, a source of shade, beauty, and environmental health in our neighborhood. Mature trees like Cordelia provide critical benefits: they reduce urban heat, improve air quality, support local wildlife, and contribute to the emotional well-being of residents. Mature trees like hers are invaluable. Once they are gone, they cannot be replaced in our lifetime. We have been told that Cordelia is “dead,” yet there are still visible signs of life. Trees of this species can endure stress and appear dormant while still recoverable with proper care. Removing her without a thorough, independent evaluation risks destroying a living, thriving part of our community. We are asking for a pause and a fair process. We call on decision-makers to: • Obtain a second opinion from an independent, certified arborist • Fully explore treatment and preservation options • Provide transparency in the tree’s assessment • Engage the community before making an irreversible decision This is about more than one tree. It’s about protecting Dorchester’s tree canopy, environmental health, and shared spaces. Cordelia, so named for Cordelia Harmon, a founder of The Boston Home, has stood for over a hundred years. She deserves due diligence, not a rushed removal. Sign this petition to help save Cordelia.
