Save Cook Lake Sacred Swans

Save Cook Lake Sacred Swans

The Issue

For half a century wildlife enthusiasts and photographers have been drawn to the beauty of Cook Lake, a 700-meter spring fed body of water in the heart of Central Alberta, a kilometer and half east of the northeastern boundary of the Town of Innisfail. It is here thousands of migratory birds, including trumpeter swans, in spring and fall, stop to rest, play and feed. These magnificent swans, with a wing span of more than three meters and growing to a length of two meters, require a long flight path for their survival. However, the swans, like so many other breeds of waterfowl and songbirds, including Canada Geese, Mallards, Lesser Scaups, Blue-winged Teal and even Bald Eagles, are threatened. In 2014, the Alberta Utilities .Commission (AUC) made the decision to grant AltaLink's application to put a power line over Cook Lake. The line will block the migratory path for the Swans and many other species of birds. All legal appeals against the AUC decision have been exhausted. Preliminary work on the transmission line has already begun. This story has only recently begun to be in the public eye. Citizens concerned with the welfare of wildlife can still bring their voice in opposition to the planned transmission line over Cook Lake. We urge you to sign this petition to force AUC to take a strong sober second look at its 2014 decision, one that supported AltaLink's alternative route over a preferred route that would not have crossed Cook Lake. Please take the time to read the attached links below. We then urge you to sign the petition. It will then be forwarded to the AUC, conservation groups, the Alberta government and the media. http://www.innisfailprovince.ca/article/Standing-up-for-the-birds-of-Cook-Lake-20160802http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/cook-lake-transmission-line-opposition-1.3711266http://www.emailthis.clickability.com/et/emailThis?clickMap=viewThis&etMailToID=971946695
