They’re shutting down Cole’s, the oldest bar in Downtown LA. 117 years of history, gone just like that.

This place isn’t just a bar. It’s a monument. It’s the kind of spot where the walls feel like they’ve been listening for over a century. Cole’s opened in 1908 and survived Prohibition, the Great Depression, two World Wars, and every rise and fall of LA’s downtown. They say it was the first to serve the French Dip sandwich. I say it was a home for stories.

LA has a habit of tearing down the past to make room for something shinier. But not everything should disappear. Some places deserve to stay.

As someone who’s passionate about history and becoming a historian myself. I believe Cole’s deserves more than a quiet closing. At the very least, this spot should be preserved as a historical landmark or a small museum, where people can still feel the heartbeat of old LA.
