The Issue

Will you stand by and see more than 40 trees felled near Harris Park, Cockermouth, to make way for an apartment block?  Please sign our petition to stop the needless destruction of local woodland and precious native wildlife.

The beautiful town of Cockermouth lies in one of the most scenic corners of England and close to the Lake District National Park, a World Heritage Site.

We, the residents and visitors of Cockermouth, have a deep-seated love for our local wildlife and the tranquillity of our town's beautiful spots. The trees that grace these areas not only add to the beauty but also play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. They contribute towards people's well-being and function as a wildlife corridor.

Our carbon-storing trees help us fight climate change and our nature crisis while providing habitat for countless species, some of which are endangered.

However, many of these very trees and the wildlife they support, including our native red squirrels, bats and birds, are now under threat. This is due to the plans to build a four-storey block of luxury flats and six new houses near the Greenway path and Harris Park.

The plans require felling and coppicing of numerous trees which will disrupt local wildlife habitats and reduce the wild beauty of this area. What's more, the development will increase traffic in a congested part of the town.

We understand the need for housing but believe it shouldn’t come at such high environmental cost.

We believe this proposed and approved development sends a terrible message for how we all consider and treat the environment and local communities.

We urge Mr Dobie to reconsider the plans and find alternatives that don’t involve felling these precious trees, which were previously covered by Tree Preservation Orders.

We passionately and respectfully urge Mr Dobie to consider the harm and impact this development will have on the area. As locals or visitors, our voices matter. So do those who can't speak out; the trees, the bats, our iconic native red squirrels, the mosses and lichens and more.

By kindly signing this petition, you're supporting sustainable development practices that respect nature's value and preserve the charm and beauty of Cockermouth. Please sign today!
