The Issue
In January of 2022, the Clemson Crew executive board learned via tweet that the University was planning to build a women's sports facility on the ground where their current boathouse stands. After attempting to contact the staff at Student Affairs for almost a year, the team was told that they were expected to remove everything from the boathouse by May 23rd for demolition. Clemson University's Athletics Department allocated approximately $150,000 for the construction of a new rowing facility to Student Affairs, who plans to build a "Club Water-Sports Complex" within the next 5 to 6 years to be shared by club rowing, sailing, and waterski. Unfortunately, since we are a student-led team, this would leave us with nowhere to feasibly practice in the interim and would destroy our team.
We are asking Clemson University to deliver the money allocated for Clemson Crew Club in order for us to create a permanent Club Rowing facility in partnership with the City of Clemson. This will allow for both the growth of the sport of rowing in Clemson as the city looks to create a Masters and Youth rowing program, as well as the growth of the local economy and local businesses with the creation of new regattas and other rowing events.
In order for us to be able to practice in the fall, we need to start construction as quickly as possible. We are asking for your help to raise awareness of this situation. We ask again for Clemson University, the Office of Student Affairs, to release to us monies allocated to the construction of a new facility for Clemson Crew. Although we are deeply saddened to see the club leave its home of 30 years, we are confident that we will persevere and thrive in the years to come.
