The Issue

Neighbors and patrons of Cherryview park,

Please let your displeasure of this park downgrade be known by signing this petition, sharing it with others or reaching out to the city.

The proposal to reduce our neighborhood park by about 50% with a fire station is concerning to say the least. This shift not only risks increasing noise and traffic in our area but also threatens to disturb the value of our neighborhood and eliminates open space and safe areas for our children to play.

The establishment of a fire station in place of a park is bound to lead to increased noise levels and traffic congestion. Fire stations are operational 24/7 and require emergency vehicles to respond rapidly to incidents. Sirens blaring at all hours will disturb the tranquility that our neighborhood currently enjoys. Moreover, increased traffic from fire trucks and personnel will create safety hazards for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly children who frequent the park. The disruption to our daily lives will be profound; instead of the sounds of laughter and play, we will be subjected to the relentless clamor of emergency vehicles.

The proposed plan for the park would condense all park amenities into a small area leaving zero space for turf sports or multi use green space. Currently the city utilizes this invaluable space for many park and rec activities that the community enjoys.

The city has self identified additional suitable locations to build a future fire station which would not disturb this neighborhood or reduce the communities park and green space. It is not impossible to have both public safety and healthy park space.

The proposal to destroy our neighborhood park for the construction of a fire station presents serious concerns that extend beyond mere inconvenience. The detrimental effects on noise levels, traffic patterns, property values, child welfare and community identity call for immediate action from residents who value the integrity of their living environment. Let us unite in petitioning against this misguided initiative and advocate for preserving our neighborhood.

I appreciate you reaching out! I am aware of the petition and the concerns that have been raised about the proposed fire station at Cherryview Park. I want to assure the community that I am engaged and listening. I value our parks and green spaces, so I understand the concerns about the potential impact of the fire station on the park. I also recognize the importance of ensuring that our community has adequate fire protection. The City of Lakeville is committed to supporting the needs of our fire department, which we have demonstrated through higher pay, better pensions and an investment in full-time staff. Now the focus is on improving our fire fighter's working space and adjusting the location of a station to respond to community growth. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the City Council to find a solution that meets the needs of our community. Whichever location that is chosen will require full consideration of how we can minimize potential impacts. I also encourage folks to attend the second neighborhood conversation about this taking place on February 13 (7 PM) at City Hall. Sincerely, Joshua Lee Council Member, City of Lakeville
