Save Chamberlain Park Incorporated

Nov 9, 2017
Despite the impending Judicial Review contesting the decision to chop Chamberlain Park, the AELB is still looking to move ahead with the first stage of its Chamberlain Park master plan which involves developing the western end of the park with barbecue and playground areas as well as its Meola Creek restoration project that involves public pathways and general public thoroughfare.
We understand that due to a lack of funds the AELB now does not intend moving the Greenkeepers shed housing the heavy plant and equipment used to maintain the 32 ha park. The shed is located at the key public access point of the park where the proposed redevelopment is taking place. That means the public will be exposed to the dangers of significant daily tractor, mower and vehicle movements as Chamberlain Park ground staff access the remaining part of the golf course and also activity by contractors involved in reconfiguration of the golf course as part of the project.
It is not a fait accompli that the redevelopment will proceed as the AELB’s plans are subject to Judicial Review to be held in the High Court on the 13th and 14th of November. Given the strong drive by the AELB to execute its plans, proper consideration must be taken as to the risks to the public arising from this poorly thought through project.
Moreover, there is little reason to rush the project given that funding for the Central Interceptor, which will impact the waste flow that currently goes through the Meola Creek, is not in place and the benefits from its introduction would still be five years away.
