Save Centennial Headwaters Forest and Stream

Save Centennial Headwaters Forest and Stream

The Issue

Dear neighbor,

Did you know that Howard County is planning on cutting down 2.4 acres of mature forest which includes 21 HUGE, OLD GROWTH “Specimen Trees” in our park?

To add insult to community injury this project threatens a healthy, clean stream, teeming with life, with a "restoration" like the one pictured above.

The headwaters stream feeds Centennial Lake, which is a source of public drinking water* (*MDE retains the classification of Centennial Lake as a Use Class IV-P : Recreational Trout Waters and Public Water Supply and to the best of our knowledge this is the justification being used to conduct this project). The county will bring in heavy construction machinery--bulldozers, excavators, and trucks through the forest and stream, resulting in dramatic, destructive changes to the entire Centennial Park ecosystem.

And all just to retrofit a sediment pond with a low hazard dam.

SAY NO TO UNNECESSARY DEFORESTATION. Tell them to withdraw from this proposed project and start over. Replace the dam on the sediment pond but leave the forest and stream alone! The county needs to hear from all of us.

THIS MATTER IS URGENT –
