The Issue

Growing up in Bury, I was always surrounded by stories of bravery and sacrifice from my great grandfather and grandfather, both of whom were proud Lancashire Fusiliers. Bury was a proud Fusilier garrison town, and the Castle Armoury stands as a testament to our rich military history. The Armoury is more than just bricks and mortar; it is a symbol of the courage, resilience, and determination that define our community.

However, this irreplaceable piece of our heritage is under threat, and we risk losing a vital chapter of Bury's story. The Castle Armoury has been the heart of our local military tradition, housing artifacts, memories, and stories that span decades. Closing it would not only erase a significant part of Bury's identity but also diminish the historic fabric of our town.

Statistics show that heritage sites enrich communities, both culturally and economically. According to Historic England, heritage tourism contributes £20 billion to the UK economy annually. Bury, with its unique history, can greatly benefit from preserving the Castle Armoury for future generations.

Other garrison towns have found success in converting former military facilities into educational and tourism hubs. Why not envision the Castle Armoury as a community museum or cultural center? This approach could honor our past while creating new opportunities for education and entertainment, attracting visitors and inspiring pride among residents.

We need your support to convince local authorities and heritage organizations of the importance of preserving this emblem of our past. Let us unite in protecting Bury Castle Armoury, ensuring our history remains accessible to all and continues to inspire.

Please sign this petition to save Bury Castle Armoury and safeguard our heritage for future generations. Together, we can keep the legacy of the Lancashire Fusiliers alive and thriving in the heart of Bury.
