Save Bunga Babbar Akali: Protect Sikh Heritage in Anandpur Sahib from SGPC Demolition

The Issue

The Sikh community, especially those with roots in Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia, stands to lose a vital piece of its heritage with the proposed demolition of Bunga Bahadar Babbran in Sri Anandpur Sahib. This historic structure, initiated in the 1940s by the BC sangat, including contributions from Sikh pioneers in Victoria and Vancouver, was built as a yaadgar (memorial) to honor the Babbar Akalis, Sikh freedom fighters who played a pivotal role in history. Its destruction would erase a meaningful connection between the Sikh diaspora and their contributions to the Panth.

If Bunga Bahadar Babbran is demolished, an irreplaceable piece of Sikh heritage, deeply tied to both Punjab and the Sikh diaspora in Victoria and Vancouver, will be permanently lost. This historic site serves as a testament to the sacrifices of the Babbar Akalis and the dedication of the BC Sikh community in preserving their legacy. Demolishing it would sever this vital connection, erasing a piece of history that embodies the resilience, pride, and contributions of Sikhs both locally and globally.

Immediate action is essential as the SGPC proceeds with plans for demolition. The rediscovery of Bunga Bahadar Babbran offers a unique opportunity to recognize and preserve this legacy, which reflects the shared history of Punjab and the Sikh diaspora in Victoria and Vancouver. Delaying action risks the irreversible loss of this heritage site, making it imperative to rally support now and advocate for its protection as a historical and cultural treasure for future generations.
