The Berawa Community

To the people of Bali,

Concerning the closure of the Berawa Beach Warungs, May 15th 2022:

This is a collective letter from the people of Berawa and wider community of Canggu to appeal against the proposed mandatory removal of the beach warungs being imposed in Berawa in May this year.

Regardless, we are asking for support to raise awareness of this sad news and support your local warung at Berawa beach.

We are concerned about the effect that these regulations will have on the families of the local Berawa businesses and the continued disintegration of Balinese culture.

“The Satpol chief says semi-permanent and permanent structures close to the shore destroy the beach panorama, particularly when tourists come to the beach to enjoy a sunset. The current steps taken by provincial authorities against businesses operating too close to the beach are being done due to complaints from domestic and international tourists and local residents. “- https://balidiscovery.com/bali-shoreside-businesses-to-be-closed/

It has been hinted at, that the complains were made by big businesses located along the shore.

Do we wish for local beach warungs to be replaced by only beach clubs?

We understand that modernisation is a part of life, and we welcome this evolution, however we also believe that modernity and tradition can co-exist in harmony to the benefit of all. We believe that with a little communication, great results can be achieved.

The traditional beach warungs are a staple of Bali life and bring so much joy to the local community and tourists alike while also providing income to many Indonesian citizens. Why should we remove these family run businesses when we can work together to create an amicable situation?

We understand that life moves forward, but at what cost?  We should celebrate and sustain the true soul of Bali and the traditions that have entranced visitors and residents alike, for many years.

We have started a petition in an attempt to prove that we are not alone in our concern and would appreciate your signing and sharing across Bali.
