I grew up with fond memories of visiting Belvedere Plantation every year. It became a cherished tradition for me and my family. There was something special about the corn mazes, hayrides, fall festivals, and other seasonal activities that brought families together and captured the spirit of autumn in the Fredericksburg area.

As I have gotten older, I have looked forward to continuing that tradition with the next generation of my family, including my niece and nephew. I hoped they would have the opportunity to experience Belvedere Plantation, build their own memories there, and perhaps one day continue the tradition with their own families.

Now, the owners of Belvedere Plantation have announced plans to sell the property, raising the possibility that this long-standing community landmark could eventually be replaced by large-scale data center development.

Belvedere Plantation has provided recreation, seasonal traditions, educational experiences, and opportunities for families to spend time together for many years. It has become more than simply a piece of property. For many people in Fredericksburg and the surrounding area, it represents memories, community, nature, and family traditions.

Once a place like Belvedere is permanently redeveloped, it may never be possible to bring it back.

Our region is already experiencing rapid growth and development, including increasing interest in data center construction. While data centers serve an important role in modern technology, they can also require significant amounts of land, electricity, infrastructure, and supporting development. Depending on their design and location, they may also create concerns involving noise, traffic, environmental impacts, and changes to the character of nearby communities.

Belvedere Plantation deserves careful consideration before its land is permanently converted to a large-scale industrial use.

Rather than immediately allowing the property to become another data center site, we encourage the owners, potential buyers, local government officials, and planners to explore alternatives that could preserve at least some of Belvedere’s recreational, agricultural, natural, and community value.

Possible alternatives could include continued agricultural or recreational use, expanded community space, educational programs and camps for children, conservation efforts, parks or trails, agritourism, or other environmentally responsible development that respects the character and history of the property.

We are not asking our community to reject progress or technology. We are asking that progress be balanced with preservation.

Fredericksburg and the surrounding region should not lose every meaningful open space or community landmark to development without considering what will be lost in the process.

We therefore call upon local government officials and planning authorities to carefully review any rezoning, special-use permit, comprehensive-plan amendment, or other approval that may be required for data center development on the Belvedere Plantation property. We also encourage the current owners and any potential buyers to consider preservation-focused alternatives before committing the land to permanent industrial development.

Belvedere Plantation has been part of the lives of countless families. Future generations deserve the opportunity to experience the same sense of community, tradition, and connection with nature that so many of us have enjoyed.
