We, the undersigned, respectfully request the immediate reconsideration of plans to remove the tree and nest housing the American Bald Eagle pair "Jim and Pam" in Auburn, Alabama. This nest, located near North College Street and the Auburn University E.W. Shell Fisheries Center, has been home to the eagles since at least 2017. The removal of their nest would not only harm these majestic birds but also undermine decades of conservation efforts that have helped bring the bald eagle population back from the brink of extinction.
We are deeply concerned about the following:
- Bald Eagles' Federal Protection: As a species protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, the eagles and their nest are entitled to the highest level of legal protection. Removing the nest, especially while the eagles are still actively using it, could jeopardize their survival and reproductive success.
- Lifelong Bond and Nest Dependency: Bald eagle pairs like "Jim and Pam" are known to return to the same nest year after year. The destruction of their nest would be devastating to them and could disrupt their ability to raise future generations. The nest is an essential part of their life cycle, and its loss would have lasting impacts on their future.
- Community Sentiment: Local residents, including those from the Tivoli HOA, have grown emotionally attached to "Jim and Pam" and have been advocating for their protection. These eagles have become a symbol of natural beauty in our community, and we believe their well-being should be a priority. The community's deep concern shows the importance of balancing development with environmental stewardship.
- Lack of Consideration for Alternatives: We urge Hughston Homes and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to explore alternative development options that would allow for both the protection of the eagle nest and the planned housing development. We believe that with careful planning and consultation with wildlife experts, a solution can be found that satisfies both environmental and development goals.
We ask for the following actions:
- Immediate suspension of plans to remove the nest and a thorough review of alternatives to protect the eagles while still proceeding with development.
- A formal review of the permit issued to remove the nest, with transparency regarding the conditions and mitigation measures considered.
- Consultation with wildlife experts and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to explore solutions that would allow the eagles to remain in their nest.
- Greater transparency in the decision-making process, with clear communication to the community about the steps being taken to protect the eagles and their habitat.
We call on Hughston Homes and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to prioritize the protection of these bald eagles and find a way to balance development with the conservation of our natural heritage. We believe that with cooperation and thoughtful planning, a solution can be reached that respects both the needs of wildlife and the development goals of the community.
