The Issue

As of May 16, 2025, ATC was officially informed that their beloved director Krista Manfredi would not be returning the following school year. This was saddening news as Mrs Manfredi had been a mentor to thousands of Athens students since 1974.

The Problem.

We were informed that Athens theater company would not gain a new director and that ATC & TTE would combine for the spring musical, and the director of Troy Theatre ensemble would run both companies. 24 hours after the email from the TSD was sent to explaining that the lack of numbers was the cause, a Schoology group invite was sent out with information on the spring musical that would run under TTC.

We want the truth.

Students and parents were told of low participation in winter 2024. Shrek done by ATC had over 50 cast members as White Christmas done by TTE had over 30. This spring, God‘s favorite done by ATC had over 40 actors and Midsummer Night’s Dream done by TTE had a select cast as the show requires which caused a smaller cast. We want the truth of reasoning behind the combination of our theaters because low participation is clearly not the answer.

We want fair treatment.

While we were being treated relatively fairly, we are finding out crucial information about us as a company, and our director after it has been passed through everyone else. It is not fair that we do not have a say in own company.

We want ATC traditions.

See, Krista Manfredi. Her legacy should not just be ripped from her by people who understand her mentorship. The events that took place in the theater cannot be replaced by a person that doesn’t understand what the companies ideals are. We have our own traditions like energy, our own thespian society, tech dinners, riffs, and a lot more. All of these traditions are going to be covered up by the TTE directors and will not show ATC’s character anymore.

The main reason for this petition is to get ATC their own and sole director.

This letter was sent to the Troy community in an effort to address misinformation being circulated about the Athens Theater Program: Dear OneTroy, We are writing today to clarify recent misinformation that has circulated regarding the future of the Athens Theatre Company (ATC) and to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the arts in Troy. As I shared in our previous communication, we want to again extend our deepest appreciation to Ms. Krista Manfredi for her more than 50 years of service to the Troy School District. Her impact on generations of students through the Athens Theatre Company has been significant, and we celebrate the legacy she leaves behind following her retirement. However, we are concerned about recent public statements that have caused confusion and frustration among families, staff, and students. It is simply not true that the Athens Theatre Company is being dissolved. To suggest otherwise is misleading and deeply unfortunate. To be clear: The Athens Theatre Company will offer a standalone theater program. The program will remain based at Athens High School, with student productions held at Athens and designed to reflect the unique spirit and talents of its student body. Mr. Marc Vickers, a seasoned and well-respected educator and theatre director, will lead the program moving forward. His appointment brings a new energy to ensure students continue to have outstanding theatrical opportunities. We understand that change—particularly in a program as beloved as ATC—can bring about strong emotions. But the reality is that student interest, enrollment patterns, and staffing needs across the district have evolved. Our decisions are rooted in student opportunity, sustainability, and our commitment to ensuring vibrant programming across all schools. This transition also provides a chance to strengthen our theater programming during the school day by rebuilding student enrollment in theater classes, ensuring a sustainable future for the performing arts at Athens. Mr. Vickers is committed to nurturing and growing the ATC program. We also believe in the value of collaboration. While ATC will maintain its own productions, we are excited about the opportunities for students across Troy to come together for larger district-wide events—something many students have expressed interest in. We invite all Athens families to an informational meeting to learn more about the 2025–26 theater season. Please join us to learn more, ask questions, and hear directly from the team leading this work. ATC Student Meeting – Thursday, May 29 at 2:30 p.m. in the TACC Families of Current/Future ATC Members – Thursday, May 29 at 7 p.m. via Teams – Join using this link. https://bit.ly/3Z2lu3E (Please make sure you join using your name.) Thank you for your continued support of the arts in the Troy School District. We remain deeply committed to preserving and growing the legacy of theater at Athens and across OneTroy.
