Save Aravalli hills from destructive policies

The Issue

The Aravalli Range, a majestic stretch of hills, forms a vital ecological backbone in the north-western part of India, including areas across the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi. As someone who deeply cares about the environmental well-being of our nation, the recent Supreme Court ruling on 20th November 2025, which states that areas below 100 meters do not qualify as hills under statutory protection, is deeply concerning. This ruling has placed vast stretches of the Aravalli Range, particularly those with lower elevation, at immediate risk of deforestation, mining activities, and urbanization. Protecting the Aravalli Range is close to my heart because I strongly believe that undermining these hills not only threatens the biodiversity they host but also jeopardizes our future by negating our fundamental Section 21 right to life.

The Aravalli Range, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, fulfills crucial ecological roles. It acts as a barrier against the desert, checks the advancement of the Thar Desert, helps in groundwater recharge, and moderates the climate, making it indispensable for the well-being of numerous communities dependent on these hills. Destroying these hills would lead to environmental degradation, affecting agricultural productivity, increasing water scarcity, and worsening air quality — ultimately imperiling the lives and livelihoods of millions.

Moreover, these hills are home to rich biodiversity, including several endangered and endemic species that thrive uniquely in this region. Ignoring this biodiversity not only means losing valuable species but also disrupting the delicate ecological balance essential for our survival.

The Supreme Court's decision does not account for the environmental and life-supporting significance of the Aravallis. It is vital to push for policies that recognize the importance of conserving all parts of the Aravalli Range as natural hills, regardless of their height. We need to urge lawmakers and policymakers to reassess this ruling and to ensure that comprehensive environmental impact assessments are carried out before granting permissions for any development projects in this sensitive area.

There are feasible solutions that can help protect the Aravallis while allowing for sustainable development. We can advocate for the amendment of existing laws to ensure all parts of the Aravallis remain protected as natural heritage sites. Community-driven conservation efforts and sustainable eco-tourism initiatives can also play a significant role in the preservation of these hills.

Join me in calling upon the Supreme Court and relevant authorities to recognize the full extent of the Aravalli Range's ecological importance and to act decisively to protect this vital natural resource. By signing this petition, you are helping to ensure a healthier, more sustainable future for all of us who inhabit this region. Your support is essential in safeguarding our right to a clean and healthy environment. Let's stand together to protect the Aravalli hills.
