The Issue

Libraries have always held a special place in my heart. They're more than just buildings filled with books; they are sanctuaries of knowledge, culture, and connection. The Annapolis Valley Regional Libraries (AVRL) in Nova Scotia are essential community hubs that provide support, entertainment, and learning opportunities for individuals and families alike. That's why the announcement of the closure of five AVRL branches on July 20, 2026, is deeply distressing.

The impending closure includes the Hantsport, Kentville, Lawrencetown, Middleton, and Port Williams branches. These closures will impact not only the communities that house them but also the surrounding areas that rely on these libraries as lifelines to resources and community engagement. Libraries are instrumental in fostering literacy, providing internet access, supporting job searches, and offering a safe space for people of all ages.

Statistics from the Canadian Urban Libraries Council show that library usage remains high, with increased demand for digital resources and programming that libraries like the AVRL faithfully provide. In these challenging times, cutting off access to such essential services will only further disadvantage our communities, especially the most vulnerable among us who rely on them the most.

Instead of closures, I urge MLAs and Annapolis Valley Regional Library to explore alternatives like adjusting hours, seeking partnerships with local businesses or nonprofits, and increasing funding through grants. Community input and creative solutions can help us keep these vibrant places of learning and connection open.

Please join me in standing against the closure of our cherished libraries. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand for education, community well-being, and the future of our neighborhoods. Let's come together to show how much we value our libraries and what they provide. Let's save the Annapolis Valley Regional Library branches! Sign now and make a difference.
