Save and preserve the McDonalds in Fair Lawn, NJ, THE FIRST McDonalds in New Jersey
The Issue
This location is, of course, the very first McDonalds location opened in the State of New Jersey, it was built in 1958 as the 34th McDonalds store in America, and the whole globe, respectively. Originally, the building was built with the iconic facade design with one golden arch per two sides and featured a complete glass wall front accompanied by red and white exterior walls. The renovation plans occurring on McDonalds stores around this country and many other countries is understood, and this specific McDonalds location is not under the National Register of Historic Places, but still, the location in Fair Lawn is still historic, the very first McDonalds in this State of New Jersey, one of the very first to ever exist, and it is still functioning as an open McDonalds restaurant.
Most who have studied about McDonald’s history, who is dedicating themselves to the evolution of retail in general or people interested in the rise and decline of activity specially in commercial buildings who know about this specific location is aware that it is in “danger” in the context that the location can face plans or the action of redeveloping the building anytime soon. There is no evidence to prove that is happening now. The building was certainly renovated, because it originally had the classic, vibrant 1950s facade with a single golden arch per side with stripes and a glass front. It now has a mansard roof with brick exterior. That indicates that it was renovated sometime around the 1970's-1990's.
Today, it is one of (approximately) three McDonalds with mansard roofs in New Jersey, and also part of the very few of the locations still with a mansard roof or any classic, older style across the country and the globe. A plentiful of people across America prefer the classic, traditional iconic designs, specially retail enthusiasts and historians. This location was open throughout significant, historical events such as the Moon Landing, the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and the rise of rock music, specially in the British Invasion of the 1960's, and the rise of television. Dwight D. Eisenhower was the president when the building was originally built in 1958.
Many people think that more historic locations that still have original physical dimensions, designs, and artifacts such as facades and signage such as the one standing at Almaden Road in San Jose, California among others that have not been altered recently such as the locations with the classic mansard roofs/classic single arches and stripes (and playplaces) such as one in Orange, Texas Lafayette, Louisiana, Cass Street in Trenton, and Cresson, PA among a handful of other preserved locations, respectfully should be preserved so current and future generations can experience what a part of history feels like.
Thank You.
