The Issue

We, the undersigned, urgently call upon local and state authorities to halt the proposed relocation of remains and take immediate action to preserve Huston Cemetery, a historic and sacred burial ground located in Sugarcreek Township, Ohio.

Huston Cemetery is the final resting place of eight individuals, believed to include early settlers who contributed to the foundations of our community. This small cemetery holds immeasurable historical and emotional significance—not just for descendants of those buried there, but for all who value heritage, dignity, and respect for the past.

The land on which Huston Cemetery sits was recently sold to developers, who initially included the cemetery in their development plans. However, the developers have now claimed the cemetery lies within the right-of-way, and, in response, the three township trustees voted to move the remains to Pioneer Cemetery.

This decision deeply concerns many members of the community. Moving these remains not only disrespects the memory of those laid to rest but also erases an important historical site from our landscape. Cemeteries are protected spaces meant to endure through generations—not to be uprooted for convenience or construction.

We respectfully demand that:

The relocation of remains be immediately paused.
An independent historical and legal review be conducted to determine the proper course of action.
Huston Cemetery be formally recognized and preserved in its current location as a historic site.
Sugarcreek Township work collaboratively with the community to honor and protect this sacred space.
We must act now to preserve Huston Cemetery—not just to protect graves, but to uphold our shared values of respect, remembrance, and historical integrity.

Please sign this petition and join us in standing for those who no longer have a voice. Together, we can protect the legacy that Huston Cemetery represents.
