Why this petition matters

This petition is to convey the importance of maintaining the existing skatepark in a usable location for the residents of Torrington and the surrounding areas. Despite its inadequacies, the Torrington skatepark is a beloved and vital spot for local action sports enthusiasts to convene and practice their chosen discipline.

Residents of the city recently approved a nearly $200 million dollar budget to rebuild the Torrington High school, which is where the skatepark is located. Unfortunately, plans were not made to relocate the skatepark during construction activities and residents will potentially be deprived access to the ramps during the entire summer of 2022. If the park closes, we will lose our safe place to skate and BMX.

Not only is this unacceptable, it is high time the city considers using a portion of that budget to rectify past transgressions and build a proper professional level freestyle venue for area residents to enjoy.

Action sports have exploded in popularity, and both freestyle BMX and Skateboarding are now Olympic sports. It is a travesty that generation after generation of Torrington area youth have not been provided with a safe, well-lit, and more suitable venue to participate in these activities. The city should acknowledge the overwhelming demand for a proper facility in the area and the healthy benefits it would bring to the community. Having a well-designed freestyle venue in our town would bring action sports enthusiasts from all over and would bolster the local economy as well as foster fulfilment and a sense of pride for the area residents.

Torrington deserves a sanctioned and safe place for people of all ages to enjoy action sports.
