Save America's Wildlife: Save the Endangered Species Act!
The Issue
Every American knows the story of our cherished American Bald Eagle and the protections the Endangered Species Act provided for them. Once on the road to extinction, they are now a true American success story, thriving in some areas and even rebounding in others that haven't seen Bald Eagles for centuries. Our hearts soar every time we see an Eagle fly! As Americans, we should be proud of our work in saving this beloved bird and icon, our symbol of freedom. And also as Americans, we should want to see this same kind of success for other species we share this land with that are in danger of extinction as well.
There is little doubt: Due to the significant pressures the giant birds once faced, without the Endangered Species Act, the Bald Eagle would likely be extinct. From habitat loss to water pollution to the spraying of DDT, Eagles faced many threats and challenges that they likely could not have survived if it hadn't been for human intervention. Our concern and involvement for the Eagles' sake saved the species, when, in 1973, people and parties came together to create the Endangered Species Act (the "ESA"). And now, at a juncture in time where so much of our wildlife is really struggling to survive, the ESA itself is under threat ... from our own government!
Earlier this month, the White House confirmed that the Trump Administration plans to overhaul the Endangered Species Act to make it "easier to build anywhere in the US where endangered species live". Now, not only are Bald Eagles once again at risk, so is every other American species that is already threatened, endangered or struggling to survive. Protections provided by the ESA are needed now, more than ever. According to our government's own data, there are currently over 1,300 legally recognized American Species on the brink of extinction. Threatening to remove the few protections afforded our wildlife by our federal government at this moment in time is not only reckless, it's unconscionable.
Some of the amazing life we stand to lose via this horrendous policy overhaul includes the Red Wolf (12 known in the wild), the Monarch Butterfly (the Western Monarch Count recorded just 9000 butterflies in 2024, down from 233,394 the previous year), the Wolverine (300 total in the lower 48 states), and the Ocelot (40 remaining in the southwest states). We have already lost so many beloved species like the American Jaguar, which unfortunately went extinct in the United States in 1964, before the Endangered Species Act.
Every local, state and federal wildlife agency, wildlife advocacy group and concerned citizen depends on the Species of Concern list compiled via State Wildlife Action Plans (SWAP) to understand what is happening with wildlife across our nation. This essential SWAP information has recently been removed from government sites, along with other important wildlife information, by our current administration. We, as US taxpayers, have invested our money, our time and our mutual care and concern on this integral act and on the information provided by the SWAP plans and other wildlife information and research updated provided by our federal government. Today, it our federal government that is robbing us of this vital information, all for the sake of private greed and political gain. By signing this petition, you acknowledge that you agree to the following:
We, as American citizens, demand that the Endangered Species Act remains intact, and that all public information pertaining to our threatened and endangered species and species of concern be immediately restored. We recognize the importance of biodiversity to all life, and to the regeneration of the earth.
Please sign this petition and ask at least 2 friends or family members to sign and share as well. Then ask them to ask 2 of their friends to sign and share ... etc., etc.
Spread the word! It will take all of us to Save America’s Wildlife!
