Save Aberystwyth Crown Post Office

Save Aberystwyth Crown Post Office
The Issue
Aberystwyth Crown Post Office, Ceredigion’s only Crown Post Office, is threatened with closure and franchise. Ceredigion will have no Crown Post Office service and there will be no Crown Post Office within 75 miles. The effect of this will be the downgrading of Post Office services available to the Aberystwyth and Ceredigion community; the loss of jobs, security and access to regular training for the Post Office staff; and a vulnerable local post office service reliant on the success or otherwise of the franchisee, for whom Post Office services will be a secondary retail objective and not a public service.
The Crown Network was tasked with financially breaking even by 2015 – this has been achieved. Now, with no directive from the Government, Post Office Ltd want to return a profit of £10 million above and beyond breaking even. Aberystwyth is one of 39 UK Crown Post Offices to be franchised, 3 Crown Offices will be closed and up to 50 more Crown offices in the UK are earmarked for franchise in the next two years in order to fulfil their profit driven agenda.
Within this agenda Wales faces a disproportionate attack. Over 50% of the Welsh Crowns have been on the Post Office target list since 2013. Welsh Post Offices and the communities they serve need to be protected. Crown Post Offices are a publically owned service and this blatant privatisation should not be allowed to destroy the fabric of our communities in Wales.
The Save Aberystwyth Post Office Campaign is a cross party community campaign supported by Ceredigion People’s Assembly, the Communication Workers Union, Aberystwyth Town Council, Ceredigion Labour Party, Plaid Cymru Ceredigion, Ceredigion Liberal Democrats, Ceredigion Green Party.
