Save a Prestatyn Landmark: Object to the Demolition of the Historic TA Building
The Issue
The former Territorial Army Building, on the corner of Bastion Road and Marine Road, is more than just a building—it's a piece of Prestatyn's history. For nearly a century, its distinctive corner tower has been a well-recognised landmark and a key feature of our town's historic fabric and character.
A proposal by the Wales and West Housing Association (WWHA) is threatening to demolish this historic structure to make way for an uninspiring, over-bearing housing block that is out of place with our thriving town centre and award-winning beach. This proposal ignores the building's historical significance and the community's desire to protect its heritage.
The building, which was originally the "White Rose" garage built by the Brookes Brothers, is a prominent gateway to our town. Demolishing it would mean losing another vital link to our past, following the recent loss of nearby Bodnant Infants School on Marine Road.
We are not against progress, but we are against the destruction of our heritage. This building can be saved and restored. Demolition is a permanent and irreversible step that we must prevent.
Please sign our petition to send a clear message: We object to the demolition of this historic Prestatyn landmark. Any proposed development should seek to re-use and re-purpose the existing building, with particular emphasis on preserving the tower and external facades.
Update (05/11/2025)
Following the massive support for this petition (over 1,100 signatures!) to save the former White Rose Buildings (also known as the Prestatyn TA Centre), the planning application for Wales and West Housing Association to demolish this building is now live on the Denbighshire County Council planning portal until December 9th 2025.
It’s important for residents to once again voice their views on the development on the DCC planning portal, as the previous public consultation was undertaken directly by the developer and won’t count when it comes to making a planning decision.
What You Need to Know: We have submitted an independent expert report to Denbighshire County Council. This report confirms the building holds significant historic and local community value and must be protected. We need the Council to formally act on this finding.
Our Ask: This is about saving the historic structure for sensitive re-use rather than specifying the future usage of the site. We are encouraging everyone to object to the full demolition, and demand the Council uses its planning powers to save and retain the key external features (like the iconic corner tower) in any future plans, protecting the building as the local heritage asset it is. The demolition will cause significant harm to the setting of the Prestatyn High Street Conservation Area which extends right down to the crossroads of Marine Road and Bastion Road. The White Rose Garage Building makes an important contribution to the historic townscape of Prestatyn as part of its continued growth as a resort town from the mid-Victorian period and into the 20th century with close historic, physical and visual connection to the neighbouring conservation area.
