HELP END POLICE BRUTALITY AND CENSORSHIP IN SAUSALITO
Why this petition matters
We are demanding Sausalito Police Sergeant Thomas Georges be immediately removed from his position and barred from serving in any capacity as a sworn law enforcement officer due to his excessive use of force, racist views toward the Black Lives Matter movement and liability he creates for the department.
According to witnesses, Sergeant Georges recently committed assault and battery against local journalist and filmmaker Jeremy Portje. Portje, who also is a search and rescue volunteer and member of Novato’s police advisory and review board, was filming as part of a story.
Portje is also investigating Georges over another incident where the Sergeant is accused of choking homeless activist Robbie Powelson while arresting him for sleeping in a tent on public land. Portje filed a public records act request of the three officers who arrested Powelson last week: Nick White, Sean Smgalski, and Thomas Georges.
The same three officers were involved in the violent arrest and seizure of Portje's equipment just days later.
One witness who saw the attack said that Portje did nothing to provoke the attack. He was only videotaping police action happening in the camp at the time.
"Jeremy was doing nothing, absolutely nothing, and Officer Georges just tackled him," Mark said.
Mark, a resident of Sausalito's Marinship Park, had a previous encounter with Georges where the Sergeant reportedly equated the Black Lives Matter movement to the Klu Klux Klan and tried to convince Mark that BLM was a racist ideology.
"This cop is a racist. He is a predator," Mark continued.
Robbie Powelson, a local activist, has also accused Thomas Georges of choking him while arresting him and threatening Powelson's father on November 24th when arrested for illegal camping.
"Thomas Georges is dangerous, he should not be in law enforcement, and I am advising people to keep themselves and their loved ones away from him," urged Powelson.
