On September 29th, the Van Deusens, who are homeless, were given a Criminal Trespass Warning for sitting in front of the Speedy Stop location in Victoria. They were never asked to leave the store by the manager before the police were called. That warning means that they are unable to patronize the store or walk on that property for 365 days. Understanding that the manager was driven by customer complaints, there was no clear communication that the Van Deusens were bothering anyone. Other managers have allowed them to wait for advocates who bring them necessary items for daily living. Many of us are patrons of Speedy Stop and now we have been limited as to what type of help we can provide. We ask that the Criminal Trespass be reversed to allow the Van Deusens to again patronize Speedy Stop and advocates will find new places to meet with them so they will not be accused of loitering.  We appreciate your help in decriminalizing homelessness in Victoria!
