Let’s change Santa Rosa County’s animal welfare laws & save our local horses from neglect!
The Issue
The current laws in Santa Rosa County do not properly advocate for horses and that needs to be changed. We need better animal welfare laws implemented to protect the countless starved, abused, and neglected horses that are being let down by our County.
Those owners who are guilty need to be prosecuted but instead they are currently walking free neglecting and abusing countless other horses and animals.
Our local rescues and rescuers are unable to seize horses which ties our hands to save only the horses we can buy to save or get surrendered to us but then many others still suffer! My friends and I have rescued dozens of horses over the years and now we would like to do our part in Honor of Pretty Bones and Jet and change our county for the better!
As of now the sheriffs office will not assist in rescues and animal control is aware of many starving horses cases and will not even seize if there's even the smallest bit of grass in the pasture and water, regardless of the horse's body condition or medical needs. It is still considered "access to food and water". That is unacceptable and it has been this way for far to long!
According to animal control a horse is not considered "in distress" if it is still standing and attempting to graze. But if you don’t know horses are silent sufferers and they will stand and have a will to live till their very last ounce of energy and life left in them. It is not right that they suffer to death at the hands of irresponsible owners.
This mindset of Animal control sets horses up to being in a terminal condition before something is actually able to be done and even then nothing is being done…
Horse people know that by the time a horse is unable to graze and goes down it is too late and that horse will suffer till it passes away or will need to be euthanized.
The current laws are simply not adequate and not protective AT ALL. Our county is failing these innocent animals everyday that they irresponsibly ignore that this is a problem.
Please sign and share and join me in advocating to make a change and prove to our county commissioners that a big change is way overdue!
Also calls to our county commissioners would help as well!
