Decrease International Tuition for the Online Semester at UBC

The Issue

I'm an international student who - like many others at this university - has struggled due to the extreme prices UBC charges its international students. We pay almost 9 times more than a domestic student, with no opportunities to get government grants (like CESB). This petition is not a cry for money, but a cry for a fairer cost of education. I am making this petition with the hope of reaching out to a member of the board of governors of UBC, and in particular Santa Ono, where we can begin a dialogue and discuss potential solutions to this issue.

If you are an international student who can't return to Vancouver for the coming semester and sees a problem with the tuition you are expected to pay, please sign this petition. From September to January, we are expected to take all our classes online, yet pay the same tuition as if we were on campus. Keep in mind that our tuition includes the AMS Health Plan, Compass Card public transportation fees, Athletics and Recreation fees, and other physical amenities that most students won't have access to this semester. Everyone should take a look at what exactly is included in our tuition, and whether it's worth it for you to be paying for them when you're sitting in front of a Zoom class 6000km away from campus.

We, as students, are asking for a re-evaluation and discussion of our online semester tuition. Taking classes at inconvenient times in countries halfway across the world do not warrant a $50,000 tuition.
