Stephanie Cervantes started this petition to Santa Monica College

We the students of Santa Monica College, encourage the Academic Senate to continue offering coursework in American Sign Language for the upcoming 2021-2022 School Year.

This motion was brought forth by students registered for American Sign Language II (ASL 2)

We are asking the Academic Senate and Department Chair of Modern Language and Culture to consider the following:

1. In fall 2020, there was a critical mass of students registered for ASL 2 who desire to move forward with developing their grammar, fingerspelling, and topicalization. Further exploring the implications of context, with respect to hand shape, position, and movement.

2.  Learning a language consists of acknowledging the new-found social inclusiveness. Deaf communities share a culture rich in values, ideas, and convictions about what is socially appropriate to sign amongst Deaf culture.

3. Deaf communities are as diverse as hearing communities, it is important to offer more diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) platforms by continuing studies in Deaf culture at Santa Monica College and offering ASL 3, 4, and so on...
