Keep the Ethnic Studies murals on our school walls.
The Issue
Santa Ana Unified School District has decided to take down four murals created by students at Valley HS in their Ethnic Studies class. We need our histories, our truths and our work to stay up.
We were told the murals are distasteful. The murals are historical and have academic value. And yes at times our history has been distasteful and the murals represent that. Truth and history are not always pretty but we need to remember the past to explain honestly why our country is at this point.
Students work should never be destroyed or censored.
We are asking for justice. We are asking that our voices be heard. We are asking to acknowledge that student work be sacred. We are asking for these pieces of art be kept untouched and left for generations to learn from.
