Sanction 'Cheehoo' for Cultural Appropriation

The issue

I'm kanaka maoli (Native Hawaiian). My family is kanaka maoli. Many of my friends are Tongan, Samoan, Tahitian, and from many other Polynesian islands, and we're honestly sick and tired of the constant cultural appropriation from non-Polynesians. It hits hard when we see parts of our identity being used by corporations who do not respect or acknowledge the depth of our heritage.

The AI Entertainment company "Cheehoo" has chosen a word that resonates deeply in the Polynesian community, using it as their company's title without any representation of Polynesian voices in their leadership. "Cheehoo" is more than just a word; it is a celebratory expression that reflects the spirit and camaraderie of our diverse island cultures. To employ this word as mere branding, without intake or contribution from Polynesian representatives, is a disservice and disregard to the people it belongs to.

This petition calls on relevant authorities, including heads of government in all the Polynesian Islands, to impose sanctions on "Cheehoo" for their cultural insensitivity. By doing so, not only can we ensure accountability for cultural appropriation, but we also set a precedent that respects and honors indigenous cultures globally. Sanctioning "Cheehoo" should involve mandating them to either change their name - or failing that, to include Polynesian representatives on their board, establishing air-tight initiatives to promote Polynesian culture, and contribute those communities whose cultural practices and expressions they exploit for their own personal gain.

We are at a juncture where inclusivity and diversity should not be buzzwords but active practices within companies gaining from indigenous cultures. This petition is about securing true representation and safeguarding our treasured cultural expressions.

Stand with us in this pursuit for cultural respect and fairness by signing this petition. Together, we can push for a change and awaken a broader consciousness about cultural appropriation often overlooked by mainstream entities.
