Stop the PTA from wasting $29K on an Electronic Sign

The Issue

Did you know… $29,000 of PTA funds will be spent on an electronic sign at Laurel Elementary?

Over the course of the past several weeks, concerned PTA members and parents have contributed over 20+ ALTERNATIVE ideas on how to spend these funds.

Some suggestions include:
+ Set of 24 iPads for TK – 2nd Grade classes
+ Computers/ Computer Lab
+ Library and/or Classroom Aides
+ Art & Science Day
+ Library Refresh
+ School Garden
+ Updating the grassy area on the playground
+ Mad Science Program
+ Robotics Program
+ Rainbow Chef Program
+ Outdoor playground equipment
+ And so much more…!!!

Those in favor of the sign feel this will increase communication to Laurel Families and we appreciate their point of view.  Our stance is that given the many existing methods of electronic communication (email: eFolder and eBlast, voicemail, etc.), these funds could be better spent inside the classroom and directly benefit the children and the teachers.

It’s not just concerned parents that are troubled by the expenditure. Community members have also expressed concern given a City Ordinance which strictly prohibits the construction of an electronic sign (Section 25.08.010: PROHIBITED SIGNS ON BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PROPERTY). http://www.cityofsanmateo.org/index.aspx?NID=1731

If you agree $29,000 could be better spent to support the growth and development of our children, please take a moment to sign the petition below.
